Let’s talk about your kitchen items and how often you should clean them!
Kitchen is the heart of your home where you prepare hearty meals and bond with family over dinner. Of all spaces, it’s essential to spend time in keeping the kitchen clean as it may easily lead to foodborne illness if not maintained properly.
Kitchen Basin: Everyday/After Each Use
Even if they look clean, your kitchen basin can get really, REALLY nasty. In fact, it is the dirtiest thing in your kitchen and has more bacteria than your toilet bowl! If not cleaned properly or frequently enough, it can seriously make you sick. Especially when handling raw food, bacterias like E.Coli and Salmonella are accumulated in your basin which causes food poisoning.
Stovetop: Everyday/After Each Use
Stovetop is an important area to clean as it is most prone to grease, food grime and bacteria buildup. Everytime when you cook, splatters or spills are unavoidable. If you don’t act fast and clean up promptly, food crumbs and oil will build up on the surface which easily become a good medium for the growth of microbes. Give it a good wipe-down after you’ve done cooking.
Kitchen Wall Tiles: Everyday/After Each Use
Tiles that are near your stove tend to get a lot of grease or oil splatter on them when you cook. Proper and regular cleaning is needed to avoid long-term stains which later on will be tough to remove or even end up staying permanently. Dish soap mixed into warm water may help to clean better. Use a brush to scrub and finish it off by wiping away the soapy residue with a clean, moist cloth.
TIP: Add ¼ cup of baking soda to 1 cup of water & a few squirts of dish soap to remove stains. Alternatively, use Kitchen Wipes to easily remove oil and tough stains without water!
Oven: Every 1 - 2 weeks or whenever you notice burnt food
Did you know that the aromas from the stuck on grease in your oven could affect the dish you are cooking? Keeping a clean oven not only reduces food borne sickness but also makes your food taste better! Make sure to remove the rack and properly clean all the accumulated grease on the sides and bottom.
Microwave: Every 1 - 2 weeks
When heating up in your microwave, food and grease accumulate over time. Without consistent cleaning, bacteria will grow inside and your microwave will start to smell. Stay ahead of the problem by frequently cleaning and wipe down spills immediately after it happens.
TIP: Having trouble removing tough stains? Fill a bowl with warm water and sliced lemon and put it in the microwave for 3 minutes. This helps to break down the dirt and grease in your microwave and makes it easy to clean.
Fridge: Every 1 - 2 months
Raw meat, veggies, eggs and other items in your fridge can harbour listeria, which actually thrives at refrigeration temps and is dangerous for elderly or low immune people. It is a humid space where fungal mould grows. Meantime, make sure you regularly remove expired or decaying food.
TIP: Having an opened box of baking soda in your fridge helps to absorb and eliminate odours. You may date the box so you remember to replace it every 1-2 months.
Kitchen Cabinet: Every 1 - 2 months
Besides keeping a clean look, cleaning your kitchen cabinet helps to keep bacteria from your food and ensure that your food storage is safe and sanitary. The outer parts of the cabinet which includes the frame, cabinet door and handle that are exposed to the air requires more frequent cleaning. On the other hand, it may not seem like it but dust and other bits of debris do collect inside the cabinet when you open and close it.
Things to keep in mind when cleaning the insides:
- Empty the cabinet before cleaning so you can reach all hidden spots.
- Before putting back the items, check on all expiry dates and get rid of expired items.
- Check the expiry dates of anything before you put them back inside to avoid bacteria growth.
- To prevent mould growth, always make sure the insides are in dry conditions.
